The vendor's own GitHub organisation and Hugging Face organisation publish weights for Wan 2.1 and 2.2 under Apache 2.0. Version 3.0, which the hosted services sell by the second, has no weights published in either place. As of 2026-09-12.

1The gap between what is open and what is sold

This is the pattern worth understanding before planning around an open-weight model. The weights published under a permissive licence are the previous generations. The version a hosted service bills you for is a later one, and it is not in the repository.

Neither half is hidden and neither is unusual. It does mean that running locally and buying seconds are not two ways of getting the same thing: they are two different model generations, and any comparison of quality or cost between them is comparing versions rather than comparing deployment choices.

2What the hardware notes actually say

The repository carries two very different figures and both are the vendor's own. The 5B model is described as running on consumer-grade cards such as a 4090, producing a 5-second 720P clip in under nine minutes on a single consumer GPU. Other commands in the same repository state a requirement of at least 80GB of VRAM.

Recorded together they answer the question people actually ask, which is not whether the model runs locally but which model runs on what. A register that quoted only the friendlier number would be quoting the repository selectively.
